Bottles.............

I've been reading some baby news that recommends quitting the bottles around 11 months. Well, I guess I'm behind the 8-ball here. Thomas drinks from his bottle for wake-up morning time, morning naptime, afternoon naptime and bedtime. Should I try to ween him off of it? He drinks from a sippy cup during his meals and there is always one laying around to pick up and drink from. And, if I am to start to ween him off it, what suggestions do you have for how to do it? I know he's not going to be happy. I don't want to hurt his teeth (coming it) or his jaw. I've read somethings about that. I'd appreciate your thoughts...........

Hey Trish! My girls never took the bottle, but I'm sure you can treat it just like you would a nursing baby and I always started to ween with the morning feeding. Bedtime seems to be the hardest, but maybe try having a sippy cup ready for him first thing in the morning with his breakfast. Hope this helps! You guys are doing an awesome job!

i agree with j'lene. start with the morning, this tends to be the easiest. replace it with a sippy cup instead. if you just wean him from his bottles one at a time, it won't be such a difficult transition for him. and, to be honest, i think you can take your time in completely weaning him....so many health guidelines are pretty scary sounding, but there are plenty of kids over 1 who still drink from a bottle. just start slow and go at his pace. hope that helps!

TRISH, if you still give thomas a bottle in his crib, it must be water, or he will end up with all sorts of decay (they call it bottle mouth) rampent decay... are you brushing his teeth yet? sorry you know me, working for a dds i've seen it all.....

Quick fix to cure Thomas from a bottle is to cut the tip of the nipple off the bottle. Give him the empty bottle. The sucking of the air will (Beep) him off and he will no longer want the bottle. And remember DO NOT GIVE him the bottle at bedtime no matter how much he screams. Laying a child down for bedtime with liquid will cause Bottle Rot. Remember Michele's son Jeffrey got this and all of his teeth had to be capped and eventually pulled. He is 21 and has false teeth. YUCK!

Matthew is down to a bottle at night (before bed) and a bottle in the morning. He has a sippy cup of formula with lunch. I plan to cut the am bottle SOON, replacing it with another sippy cup of formula. Then, just before his first birthday, I plan to cut the last bottle. Since he's taking a sippy cup, I think you could probably just start to replace the bottles with sippies.
